Since Corey had Spring Break last week, we decided to take a trip down to Keewaydin Island, one of our favorite anchorages. When we left on Friday morning we weren’t sure how long we’d stay so we prepared to be gone for a week. Our dinghy motor was in the shop so we took the kayaks along as the boys’ transportation to and from shore. Randy had taken the week off from work so he could kayak and fish with Corey. I’m still laid up from foot surgery a few weeks ago and not really able to kayak and play so it made sense for me to just work some through the week. Without the dinghy running I spent most of the week aboard Blue Turtle.

The trip there was beautiful with calm seas. Corey spotted a triple tail on a buoy and the boys decided to go for it. Corey hooked up this beautiful triple tail in a bout 2 minutes. He got it over to Randy on the swim platform but Randy lost it trying to get a grip on it. The boys were bummed but Corey was excited since neither of them have ever caught one.

Of course, no trip anywhere would be complete without Corey being pulled behind Blue Turtle on some sort of board—this time his new wake board. We’ve seen him trawler surf, trawler skim board and now there’s trawler wake boarding.

Joining us on Saturday at Keewaydin, were friends from the marina, Chris and Courtney on their catamaran, Sukha. Their crew consisted of their two sons and a friend as well as 2 pups (Tara and Kona). They stayed at Keewaydin through Tuesday and the boys had a great time fishing.

On Saturday evening, we were invited over for dinner on Sukha. Chris was kind enough to come get us on his tender since we were without one. Dinner was fabulous as was the company—the boys went fishing after dinner while Sophie and Kona played. Chris, Courtney, Randy and I watched the sun set from the top of the cat until the noseeums came out to attack.

On Sunday, the boys decided to try to spear fish along the shore. We’ve seen people fish and spear fish along the shore and Randy and Corey have seen good sized sheepshead and snapper there before. Unfortunately, the visibility wasn’t good enough so they decided to just fish with rods.

Monday afternoon, we had planned to all go to the beach and build a bonfire. Chris and Courtney were kind enough again to shuffle us over to the beach. The afternoon was a bit misty and foggy at first and then cleared some. It was a perfect evening and we had the beach mostly to ourselves. The boys threw the frisbee and volleyball and Corey and Cole eventually took the kayaks out to the shore break for some kayak surfing. The pups wore themselves out running around the beach. Everyone slept well that night.

On Tuesday, the Sukha crew headed north for home. We decided to stay one more night and then head to New Pass on Wednesday for a couple of days. Randy and Corey kayaked and fished most the day while I worked. In the afternoon, we had a storm move through. It didn’t bring any rain but it did bring a ton of wind. The boys were by the mangroves fishing when the wind started up and they tried to make it back to the boat but the wind was too strong. They had to wait it out until they could paddle back to Blue Turtle. Blue Turtle was surfing some large waves with Sophie and I aboard. Thankfully, nothing was damaged and the boys made it back safe.

On Wednesday morning we headed north to New Pass. The trip was pleasant and seas were calm. We stayed at New Pass for two nights and it was more kayaking and fishing for the boys and work for me. Seems like I got more accomplished with work on hook than I do at the dock —— with a better view no less! Friday morning we reluctantly pulled the anchor and headed back to the dock. It’s always a fabulous week when we’re away from the dock and we had a great time with Chris and Courtney and their crew.
